Successful Screenings
Spring has sprung and it is time to get out there
and do some screenings!
Why do screenings?
- To get new patients.
- To educate your community. When a community understands chiropractic the community will become patients for a lifetime.
- To have presence in your community. It is the same reason McDonald’s Restaurant continues to advertise. Everyone knows McDonalds. Where they are, what they serve, yet, they constantly advertise to stay in the forefront of your mind. Politicians do the same thing. They want to have that presence of mind because most people will vote for the most familiar candidate. It is the same for you.
Who should do the Screening?
The Doctor and a trained staff member. Many doctors report that testing works better with two individuals: One individual tests the person, and the Doctor is handed a printout to analyze and sign up the patient, or pass them back to the screener to sign them up.
Where should I do a Screening?
In the office
- Hang a print out of a scan at the front desk and instruct the staff to let all patients know that you are testing all of your current patients and anyone they refer to the office for free this month
- Free? Definitely, the effect on your current patients will be increased retention. It is mandatory that you send a copy of the scan home with the patient to put on their fridge. (you may want to order some magnets with your name and number on them)
- Free testing on potential patients can take the place of your free exam or 10 minute consult, but it takes much less time.
- Call your local schools and offer the teachers a free 15 minute massage and stress test (sEMG). Take your massage therapist or one you refer to. They will be anxious to help you because it will increase their business as well, if not call another.
- Set the date and make a sign up sheet to leave in the teachers’ lounge. Place a copy of a sEMG graphic in all of their boxes with the date and time you will be at the school. Make sure to tell them about the free massage and stress test.
School open house
- Now offer to do the same for the parents at the next open house, but instead of the massage offer to bring cookies and refreshments
- Scan a child and then scan the child with their backpack on placed in front of them. The results are astonishing and bring awareness to any parent about the effects of heaving backpacks on their children’s backs
Banks
Gyms
- See if you can set up a poster or some fliers with a sEMG back graph graphic a week beforehand with the date and time of screening.
- Monday through Thursdays are best

Should I print out the Results at the Screenings?

The printout is such a good advertisement for your practice. You can be certain that many potential patients will take home the printout and it brings in many friends and family members to your practice for testing. Offer it for free to any family members if you wish. Set the printer to draft mode if you want to have it print faster and conserve ink. In general, with today’s faster and compact printers it is worth it to print out your tests as they are your “business card” which will lead to new patients. Watch video on how to print scans onto business cards.
How to perform a screening without power
You can run the entire setup off battery power with the proper combination of a few simple products.
- A standard marine battery (deep cycle…120 amp hours is best).
- Power inverter (converts cigarette lighter adapter 12 volt to 120 volt, 60 Hz) has standard wall outlet jack for plugging in your power strip. I purchased mine from Target for around $70.00. One that meets FCC Class A requirements will always be better, but may be too expensive. Check prices. I use a 150 watt converter. Check the total wattage of the equipment you are using to determine what you need. A notebook computer, printer and 19” TV utilize approximately 200 watts. Make sure you have enough wattage!
- You will need a charger for the battery.

This arrangement will operate a notebook computer, monitor, printer and sEMG/thermo unit for up to 12 hours!
